Offense

Before tweaking his knee on January 14th, Zach LaVine averaged 25.6 points on 49.1% shooting from the field and 41.2% shooting from deep and looking like a top 10 player in the league. Even playing through a torn ligament in his left thumb for the first two months, he played great! At the time, Chicago was 27-12. LaVine missed five games but wasn’t playing at 100% for the rest of the season.

Before the all-star break, LaVine had his knee drained to keep playing in the second half of the season. After January 14th, LaVine finished the season with averages of 23.7 points on 45.5% shooting from the field and 36% from three. He tended to shoot more than attack the rim, which led to many more questions about his health. But he finished the season averaging 24.4 points, which was 17th best in the NBA.

Defense

After getting gold during the Olympics, LaVine became a much better defender, but not great. LaVine finished the season with a defensive rating of 116.1, the second-highest out of Bulls players who played more than 50 games. After his knee injury on January 14th, opponents had a higher field goal percentage against him. LaVine had defensive lapses and failed to rotate. He will look to improve his defense for next season when he will be 100% healthy.

Overall Grade

With all the events that occurred during the 2021-22 season, Zach LaVine had a pretty good season. He earned a second straight All-Star appearance and his first playoff appearance. He gave his heart out and could have easily sat out for the rest of the season, but he didn’t and helped Chicago get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. The question is if LaVine deserves a max contract of 5 years/$200 Million. In my opinion, he deserves, and according to Bleacher Report, he is expected to return to the Windy City.
